Elder abuse is a growing problem in Malaysia’s fast-ageing society but it is a crime that is grossly under-reported. This problem often remains undetected because of poor public awareness and lack of knowledge among personnel. Just like domestic violence, most view it as a “family matter” that is best dealt within the family.
Elder abuse, as defined by the World Health Organisation, is a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust, which causes harm or distress to an older person.
